South Korea recorded the first comeback victory of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, overturning a one-goal deficit to defeat the Czech Republic 2-1 in their Group A opener.

The Koreans dominated proceedings for much of the first half, with captain Son Heung-min spearheading their attacking efforts. Despite controlling possession and creating the better opportunities, South Korea failed to convert their chances and went into the break level at 0-0.

The match burst into life after halftime when Czech captain Ladislav Krejci stunned the South Koreans by heading home from a long throw-in, giving his side a 1-0 lead against the run of play.

South Korea responded positively and restored parity just eight minutes later. Midfielder Hwang In-beom produced a composed solo effort to find the back of the net, bringing his side level and shifting momentum in their favour.

The turning point arrived shortly afterward when Tomas Soucek appeared to have regained the lead for the Czech Republic, only for his goal to be disallowed for offside. South Korea capitalised on the reprieve almost immediately, with Oh Hyeon-gyu sliding in from close range to complete the comeback and put his side 2-1 ahead.

The Koreans successfully defended their advantage in the closing stages to secure all three points and make an impressive start to their World Cup campaign.
