Examiner Bureau | Anantnag:

Security was significantly intensified across South Kashmir on Wednesday following the killing of a Jammu and Kashmir Police personnel in a terror attack in Anantnag district, with authorities launching a massive security operation to prevent the movement of militants and ensure public safety.

Soon after the attack, police and security forces established multiple checkpoints (nakas) at key locations across South Kashmir, particularly in Anantnag and adjoining districts. Security personnel conducted thorough checks of vehicles passing through the checkpoints, verifying the identities of commuters and inspecting vehicles as part of heightened surveillance measures.

Officials said the stepped-up security arrangements are aimed at tracking down the militants involved in the attack and preventing any attempt to flee the area. Security forces also carried out intensive search operations at several locations, while additional personnel were deployed at strategic points to strengthen the security grid.

The heightened vigil followed the killing of Head Constable Ashiq Hussain of the Jammu and Kashmir Police, who was shot dead after militants opened fire on a security team during an anti-militancy operation in the Lal Chowk area of Anantnag town. The attack triggered a large-scale manhunt, with security forces immediately cordoning off the area and launching searches to trace the assailants.

Witnesses said security checks were intensified on major roads connecting Anantnag with neighbouring districts, while vehicles entering and leaving sensitive areas were subjected to detailed inspections. Motorists were asked to cooperate with security personnel as checking continued throughout the day.

Senior police officials are closely monitoring the situation, and security agencies have been directed to maintain a high state of alert across the region. Officials said surveillance has also been enhanced at vulnerable locations to prevent any further militant activity.

The killing of the policeman has prompted a coordinated response from the Jammu and Kashmir Police and other security agencies, with operations continuing across South Kashmir to identify and apprehend those responsible for the attack.

Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant and cooperate with security personnel during the ongoing operations. They also appealed to citizens to report any suspicious movement or activity to the nearest police station, reiterating that all necessary measures are being taken to maintain law and order and ensure the safety of residents.
