An earthquake of magnitude 5.5 struck Leh in Ladakh early Thursday morning, according to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS).
The tremor was recorded at 6:05:15 am at a depth of 10 kilometres, with the epicentre located at 36.881 degrees north latitude and 74.402 degrees east longitude, the NCS said in a post on X.
The shallow earthquake caused tremors in the region, although there were no immediate reports of casualties or major damage to buildings.
According to the NCS, the earthquake occurred at a relatively shallow depth of 10 kilometres. Shallow earthquakes can produce stronger shaking at the surface because seismic waves travel a shorter distance before reaching the ground.
Authorities were monitoring the situation, while further assessments of the impact, if any, were expected to follow.
The tremor comes as the Himalayan region remains seismically active, with Ladakh and adjoining areas located in a zone vulnerable to earthquakes. Residents were advised to remain alert and follow official advisories in case of aftershocks or further seismic activity.
