A 17-year-old Indian-origin teenager has been charged with allegedly killing his mother and younger brother inside their family home in Acton, Massachusetts, following an overnight search that ended with his arrest early Wednesday.
Arjun Aravind, a student at Acton-Boxborough Regional High School, faces two murder charges in connection with the deaths of his mother, 45-year-old Sudha Venkatesan, and his 14-year-old brother, Siddharth Aravind.
Authorities said Aravind also faces two counts each of assault and battery on a household or family member and assault and battery. He has additionally been charged in connection with the alleged unauthorised use and theft of a motor vehicle.
Mother and Son Found Dead at Family Home
The deaths were discovered Tuesday evening after a tutor arrived at the family’s Martha Lane residence shortly after 6:30 pm for a scheduled appointment but was unable to enter the house or contact anyone inside.
The tutor subsequently contacted Arjun’s father, who also failed to reach his wife or children. He then requested that Acton police conduct a welfare check at the residence.
According to authorities, Arjun’s father had seen his wife earlier that morning before leaving for work, while his younger son had last been seen around midday.
When officers entered the residence, they found both Sudha and Siddharth dead. Investigators located Siddharth on the first floor, while his mother’s body was found in the finished basement.
Police said both victims had suffered “obvious trauma”. The precise cause and manner of death have not yet been determined, pending findings from the Chief Medical Examiner. Investigators are also working to establish whether a weapon was used.
Teen Allegedly Fled in Mother’s Car
Arjun was not at the residence when police arrived. Authorities said he had left the property in his mother’s Honda Accord.
A search operation was subsequently launched, with law enforcement agencies and members of the public alerted to look for the teenager and the vehicle.
The search ended early Wednesday when police in nearby Wayland responded to an unrelated alarm at a parking lot and discovered the Honda with Arjun inside.
He was arrested without incident, authorities said.
Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan and Acton Police Chief Douglas Sturniolo are overseeing the investigation.
Investigators Examine Online Activity
Investigators have also examined Arjun’s online activity, which prosecutors said had raised concerns about his behaviour before the killings.
According to the Middlesex County District Attorney’s Office, the teenager had recently used the internet and ChatGPT to search for theoretical ideas or fantasies involving the killing of his family.
Authorities also said he had used ChatGPT while developing ideas for “Gothic novel-kind of stories”, including creating characters and exploring fictional scenarios.
Investigators have not said that the alleged ChatGPT searches established a motive for the killings. The circumstances surrounding the deaths, including the teenager’s alleged actions and possible motive, remain under investigation.
Charges and Court Proceedings
In addition to the two murder charges, Aravind faces two counts each of assault and battery involving a household or family member and assault and battery, as well as charges related to unauthorised use of a motor vehicle and motor vehicle theft.
He was expected to appear before Lowell Juvenile Court on Wednesday. However, because that court does not have jurisdiction over murder cases, the murder and related assault charges are expected to be addressed later in Concord District Court.
The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have not disclosed the Indian state from which the family originally came.
As the legal process moves forward, prosecutors and investigators are expected to examine the evidence surrounding the deaths, the teenager’s movements before and after the incident, and the circumstances that may have preceded the alleged killings.
