At least five people were killed after a Mahindra Scorpio skidded off the road and plunged into the Chenab River in the Dachhan area of Kishtwar district on Saturday, officials said.
According to officials, the accident occurred in the morning when the vehicle, bearing registration number HR29AG-0648, was travelling from Yainwan, Dangdaroo, towards Sounder. The vehicle reportedly skidded off the road before falling into the Chenab River.
A police team, accompanied by local residents, immediately reached the accident site and launched a rescue and recovery operation.
Officials said five bodies have so far been recovered from the site. However, the exact number of people travelling in the vehicle was not immediately known.
The identities of the deceased are also being ascertained, officials said, adding that further details regarding the circumstances of the accident are awaited.
Police have taken cognisance of the incident, while rescue and recovery operations remain underway.
