Fans waiting for the next chapter of Ayan Mukerji’s Brahmastra may finally have reason to celebrate. Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt’s Brahmastra Part One: Shiva arrived in theatres in 2022, and since then, anticipation has continued to build around the filmmaker’s ambitious Astraverse. According to a report by Pinkvilla, work on Brahmastra Part 2: Dev could begin soon, with Ranbir Kapoor expected to return in a challenging dual role.

According to the report, Ranbir is likely to begin shooting for Brahmastra Part 2 after completing work on Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana Part 2, with filming expected to commence by January 2027. A source cited by the publication said the actor is particularly excited to return to the franchise and will portray both Shiva and Dev in the sequel, setting up a significant acting challenge.

The report also claims that filmmaker Ayan Mukerji is in discussions with Deepika Padukone for the role of Amruta. The character is expected to play an important part in the expanding mythology of the Astraverse, and the filmmaker is reportedly keen to bring an actor with considerable screen presence and gravitas into the franchise.

“Ayan and the core team are confident about bringing Deepika on board,” the source was quoted as saying, adding that discussions are currently underway. However, an official confirmation is expected to depend on the actor’s schedule and the overall production timeline.

Brahmastra Part One: Shiva, released on September 9, 2022, marked the first on-screen collaboration between Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt. The film also featured Amitabh Bachchan, Nagarjuna and Mouni Roy in key roles, while Shah Rukh Khan made a special appearance. The fantasy adventure, which introduced audiences to Ayan Mukerji’s planned Astraverse, reportedly earned close to Rs 400 crore at the global box office.

The first film was envisioned as the beginning of a much larger cinematic universe built around the concept of powerful astras and their guardians. The sequel was announced as Brahmastra Part Two: Dev, followed by a third instalment intended to conclude the initial trilogy.

In April 2023, Ayan Mukerji had announced release plans for the second and third instalments, with Brahmastra Part Two initially scheduled for December 2026 and the third film planned for 2027. However, those timelines could not be maintained as the project underwent changes in its development and production plans.

At the time, Mukerji had indicated that the next two films would be significantly larger in scale and ambition than the first instalment. He had also said that he was focused on expanding the story and mythology after taking into account the audience response and feedback to Brahmastra Part One.

With Ranbir reportedly preparing to take on the dual challenge of Shiva and Dev and Deepika Padukone being considered for the role of Amruta, the sequel could mark a substantial expansion of the Astraverse. For now, however, the casting and production details remain subject to official confirmation from the filmmakers.
