Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Thursday announced a one-year grace period for auto-rickshaw and cab drivers to acquire working knowledge of Marathi, saying no action would be taken against them during the period.
Fadnavis said the decision followed discussions with drivers, who supported learning Marathi but sought more time, particularly for those from different age groups and backgrounds.
The announcement comes days after Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik said drivers failing to demonstrate working knowledge of Marathi could face suspension of their authorisation badges, followed by cancellation if they remained non-compliant.
The language requirement has sparked political controversy and tensions among drivers, including migrant workers. The policy has also been challenged in the Bombay High Court, where four cab drivers have sought a stay, arguing that the mandate could affect the livelihoods of lakhs of drivers.
Fadnavis said the additional year would provide drivers an opportunity to learn the language without facing immediate punitive action.
