Examiner Bureau | Jammu:

Two police personnel, including the in-charge of Border Police Post (BPP) Chakrohi, have been suspended and three Special Police Officers (SPOs) attached following the custodial death of a 32-year-old man at the police post, officials said.

The action was ordered by Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Jammu Joginder Singh after the death of Uttam Chand, a resident of Rakh village, triggered protests in Chakrohi on Wednesday.

According to officials, Chand was allegedly taken into custody from his home at around 8 pm on Tuesday after a neighbour lodged a complaint in connection with a family dispute.

Locals, however, alleged that Chand was assaulted inside the police post during the night and that his family members were not allowed to meet him. The allegations are expected to be examined as part of the inquiries ordered into the incident.

Following Chand’s death, protesters blocked roads in the Chakrohi area, demanding an SIT probe, compensation for the bereaved family and an SPO position for Chand’s brother.

Senior police and civil administration officials reached the spot and held discussions with the protesters in an effort to restore calm.

SP Headquarters Jammu Anna Sinha said that both a magisterial inquiry and a departmental inquiry had been ordered to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the death.

Meanwhile, the neighbour who had allegedly lodged the complaint against Chand was also arrested, officials said.

Further action will depend on the findings of the inquiries.
