Two persons died after falling from a boat into the River Jhelum while extracting sand in the Dachanpara area of Rafiabad in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district during the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday, officials said.
According to an official, the duo was extracting sand when they accidentally fell into the river. Their bodies remained in the water overnight and were recovered on Wednesday morning.
The deceased were identified as Javid Ahmed Mir, 28, and Mohammad Anees Malik, 29, both residents of Dachanpara.
Officials said cognisance of the incident had been taken and a probe initiated to ascertain the circumstances leading to the deaths.
