An Assam Rifles jawan was killed and four others injured after a patrol team came under suspected militant attack along the India-Myanmar border in Arunachal Pradesh’s Changlang district on Tuesday, officials said.
The incident took place around 6.30 am near Nampong Nallah under Nampong circle, when personnel of the 21 Assam Rifles were conducting a patrol in an area where border fencing work is underway.
Havildar Jankhokai Kuki, 42, was killed in the firing, while four other personnel sustained injuries and were being evacuated for medical treatment. Their condition was not immediately known.
Security forces have intensified operations in the area following the attack and launched efforts to track down those responsible.
Preliminary reports suggested the involvement of cadres affiliated with NSCN (K-YA), although the identity of the attackers has not been officially confirmed. An official statement from the Assam Rifles is awaited.
Changlang Superintendent of Police Kirli Padu said police had received information about the incident and were collecting further details.
“We have received information about the incident that took place along the India-Myanmar border and have asked the OC of Changlang police station to collect information related to it,” the SP said.
The Changlang stretch of the India-Myanmar border is considered sensitive because of the presence and movement of insurgent groups operating in the region and across the international boundary.
The incident comes amid heightened security operations along the border, where security forces have been maintaining surveillance against insurgent activity. The situation remains under investigation.
