Examiner Bureau | Jammu:

A 36-year-old Pakistani undertrial prisoner died at the high-security Central Jail in Kot Bhalwal on Sunday in an apparent case of suspected suicide, officials said.

The deceased, identified as Shahid Imran, a resident of Sargodha in Pakistan’s Punjab province, had been arrested near the International Border in the Makwal sector of Jammu in October 2024 and was subsequently lodged in Kot Bhalwal jail, officials said.

According to officials, Imran, who was reportedly suffering from a mental health condition, was found unconscious inside his cell. A preliminary inquiry indicated that he may have attempted suicide.

He was immediately shifted to Government Medical College hospital in Jammu, where doctors declared him dead.

Hospital sources said the deceased had a ligature mark around his neck. His body was shifted to the mortuary for postmortem examination, officials said.

Further details regarding the circumstances surrounding the death and the outcome of the inquiry are awaited.
