Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Saturday vowed to continue the Opposition’s campaign against the Narendra Modi government amid heightened political tensions and security restrictions in Delhi.
In a post on X, Gandhi said he had been challenging Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) for more than a decade and claimed to understand their political approach.
“I’ve been fighting Narendra Modi and the RSS for over a decade now. I understand them like you would understand your opponent — inside out, like the back of my hand,” he wrote.
Accusing the government of relying on police action to deal with political dissent, Gandhi challenged the authorities to arrest opposition leaders and young protesters, asserting that such measures would not force them to abandon their campaign.
“We are surrounding you, and we are not going to back down,” he said, adding that the Opposition already had the information it needed.
Gandhi said the Opposition would continue to defend the Constitution and protect what he described as the voice of the Indian people. He also praised young protesters and urged them to continue their demonstrations, assuring them of the Opposition’s support.
“Youth of India, I am proud of you. Keep protesting. We are standing with you,” he said, adding that the Opposition would seek to defeat those it accused of attacking the Constitution.
His remarks came as Delhi witnessed extensive security arrangements and detentions linked to the Cockroach Janta Party’s (CJP) October 10 protest demanding the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Reports cited in connection with the demonstrations put the deployment of police and paramilitary personnel across the capital at more than 35,000.
The Opposition has been raising allegations concerning the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, questioning the Election Commission’s handling of the process. The Commission, however, has defended its procedures, maintaining that its decisions are guided by established legal processes.
The protests and competing claims have intensified the political confrontation between the Opposition and the ruling BJP over electoral processes, freedom of protest and the role of constitutional institutions.
