The Democratic Party’s sweeping performance in the 2026 US midterm elections is emerging as one of the most significant congressional victories in recent American political history, with the party moving closer to its biggest gains in the House of Representatives since the 1974 elections that followed the Watergate scandal.

With votes still being counted in several constituencies, Democrats are just two seats short of matching the 45-seat gain recorded in 1974, underlining the scale of the setback for President Donald Trump and the Republican Party.

The results have already given Democrats control of the House, but the latest figures indicate that their victory could extend well beyond reclaiming the chamber. The party has made substantial gains in competitive districts, suburban constituencies and areas that had increasingly shifted towards Republicans.

According to figures available on November 5, Democrats had secured 253 seats, registering a net gain of 41, against 157 seats for Republicans. With 410 of the 435 House contests called, the Democrats had comfortably crossed the 218-seat threshold required for a majority. The remaining races could further widen their lead.

The historical comparison with 1974 is particularly significant. In the midterm elections held in the aftermath of the Watergate scandal and Richard Nixon’s resignation, Democrats gained 45 House seats, while Republicans suffered a major defeat. The 2026 results are approaching that benchmark, reviving comparisons with one of the defining electoral setbacks in modern US politics.

The Democratic gains have been geographically widespread. The party has flipped more than 30 Republican-held congressional districts, including constituencies that had supported Trump by significant margins in the 2024 presidential election. The results suggest that the electoral backlash against the administration has extended beyond traditional Democratic strongholds.

Republicans had also sought to consolidate their position by redrawing congressional district boundaries in several states. However, the strategy has not delivered the expected protection for several Republican incumbents, with Democratic candidates making gains even in districts where the revised boundaries were intended to strengthen the party’s prospects.

The scale of the shift is also reflected in voting patterns. A Reuters analysis of approximately 2,100 counties found that Republicans had lost ground in 99 per cent of the counties where most votes had been counted. Their vote share in these areas had declined by an average of nine percentage points compared with Trump’s performance in 2024.

The political impact of the election extends beyond the House. Democrats have also secured control of the Senate, winning at least seven Republican-held seats and establishing a majority of at least 54-44, including two independents who caucus with them. The outcome gives Democrats control of both chambers of Congress during Trump’s second presidency.

For Trump, the results represent a major setback midway through his term. With Democrats controlling both chambers, they will have the authority to chair congressional committees, scrutinise government spending, conduct investigations into the administration and obstruct much of the Republican legislative agenda.

Although Trump retains presidential veto powers, a Democratic-controlled Congress could significantly complicate his legislative priorities during the remaining two years of his presidency.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries is also poised to become the first Black Speaker of the House when the new Congress convenes in January 2027, marking another historic development following the Democratic victory.

The party’s immediate challenge, however, will be to translate its electoral gains into a coherent legislative agenda. Differences between its progressive and moderate factions could test the unity that helped deliver the sweeping victory.

For now, the results mark a remarkable Democratic resurgence, with the party approaching its strongest House performance since the Watergate-era elections and securing control of both chambers at a critical point in Trump’s presidency.
