Pakistan batter Babar Azam could be set for a return as the country’s T20I captain, with reports suggesting the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is considering reinstating him ahead of a crucial run of international fixtures.

According to Pakistani publication Daily Ausaf, the PCB is evaluating a leadership change in the shortest format following a review of the team’s recent performances. If the proposal is approved, Babar is expected to replace Salman Ali Agha, who has led the side during its ongoing transition phase.

The reported move comes shortly after Babar regained Pakistan’s Test captaincy, indicating the board may once again look to its most experienced leader to guide the national side across multiple formats.

While the PCB has not officially confirmed the development, the report states that Babar has emerged as the leading candidate to take over the T20I captaincy as Pakistan begins preparations for upcoming bilateral series and future ICC tournaments.

Babar previously captained Pakistan in all three formats and enjoyed notable success in T20Is. Under his leadership, Pakistan reached the semifinals of the 2021 T20 World Cup before finishing runners-up in the 2022 edition. He also owns one of the highest win percentages among Pakistan’s T20I captains.

Should the leadership change materialise, incumbent captain Salman Ali Agha is expected to remain an important member of the squad, with the PCB reportedly continuing to value his contributions to the team’s setup.

One of Pakistan’s most consistent white-ball batters, Babar’s vast experience, proven leadership record, and familiarity with the role are believed to be key factors behind the PCB’s reported consideration.

No official decision has been announced, and the PCB is expected to make its position clear only after concluding internal discussions and finalising the squad for Pakistan’s next T20I assignment. Until then, the board has refrained from commenting publicly on the speculation.
