The Jammu and Kashmir unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has denied any association with the individual seen in a viral video that allegedly shows a woman being molested during a protest at Hari Singh High Street in Srinagar.
In a statement, BJP J&K State Co-media Incharge and Advocate Sajid Yousuf Shah said the party had cross-checked the matter with multiple sources and found that the person seen in the video was not associated with the BJP.
Shah said large public gatherings could attract unidentified or unaffiliated individuals and maintained that the actions of such persons should not automatically be attributed to the organisers or the BJP.
He said efforts were underway to establish the identity of the individual involved, as well as to determine the portals responsible for publishing the woman’s face.
The BJP leader condemned the alleged incident and said that once the identity of those responsible is established, appropriate action should be taken in accordance with the law.
He also appealed to the public to refrain from circulating unverified information or attributing the alleged conduct of an individual to the party without establishing the facts.
