The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly was adjourned on Monday shortly after the commencement of its Autumn Session after BJP legislators entered the well of the House and staged a protest against the National Conference-led government.
The BJP members raised slogans targeting the government led by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, disrupting proceedings despite repeated interventions by Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather.
As the protest continued, the House witnessed a noisy exchange, with BJP legislators continuing their sloganeering. The Speaker subsequently adjourned the proceedings amid the continuing uproar.
The BJP had identified several issues for discussion during the session, including unemployment, outsourcing, regularisation of daily-wage workers, electricity tariffs and the concerns of employees engaged under the National Health Mission (NHM).
Earlier, BJP legislators displayed placards highlighting their demands, including action on the concerns of NHM employees, withdrawal of the increased power tariff and regularisation of daily-wage workers.
The seven-sitting Autumn Session of the J&K Legislative Assembly is scheduled to continue from September 21 to 30. The BJP and PDP are expected to raise a range of issues concerning governance, employment, reservation and public services during the session.
