The Election Commission of India has taken serious note of Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge’s controversial “terrorist” remark directed at Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a press conference in Chennai, triggering a sharp political backlash.

The poll body has issued a notice to Kharge, seeking an explanation within 24 hours, following a formal complaint by the Bharatiya Janata Party.

A high-level BJP delegation, including Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, met the Commission on Wednesday, demanding strict action. Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju termed the remark an “insult to the entire country,” expressing strong displeasure over the statement.

The controversy erupted during Kharge’s campaign in Chennai for the DMK-led alliance ahead of the Tamil Nadu elections. Questioning the AIADMK’s alliance with the BJP, Kharge allegedly referred to the Prime Minister as a “terrorist,” drawing widespread criticism from BJP leaders.

Reacting strongly, Union Minister Piyush Goyal demanded a public apology, alleging that the remark disrespected the nation and was made at the behest of senior Congress leadership.

Clarifying his statement, Kharge later said his remarks were misinterpreted. He stated that he had accused the Prime Minister of “terrorising” political opponents through agencies such as the ED and Income Tax Department, and insisted that he did not literally call him a terrorist.

The incident has intensified political tensions ahead of the elections, with both sides continuing to trade sharp accusations.
