Examiner News Desk | Srinagar:

In a major move to strengthen road safety and traffic regulation, the Jammu and Kashmir Traffic Police has been equipped with more than 350 modern vehicles and hundreds of advanced enforcement gadgets to improve monitoring and traffic management across the Union Territory.

Officials said the newly inducted fleet includes interceptor vehicles, highway patrol units, motorcycles, cranes and other specialised vehicles aimed at enhancing enforcement capabilities and ensuring smoother traffic regulation on highways and urban roads.

According to officials, over 1,000 enforcement assets have been procured through road safety funds as part of a broader initiative to modernise the traffic policing system and improve emergency response mechanisms.

The newly added fleet comprises 213 Pulsar motorcycles, 69 Royal Enfield motorcycles, 19 interceptor vehicles, 16 Innova highway patrol vehicles, seven Hydra cranes, 23 cranes and three Tata Winger vehicles for highway management and field enforcement duties.

To promote transparency and accountability during enforcement operations, 685 body-worn cameras have also been provided to traffic police personnel across the Union Territory.

Apart from vehicles, the department has procured several modern traffic management tools, including traffic safety belts, LED batons, barricades, reflective safety jackets, traffic cones, breath alcohol analysers and first responder kits.

Officials further stated that traffic enforcement agencies across Jammu and Kashmir have now fully shifted to a 100 percent e-challan system to ensure transparent and technology-driven action against traffic violators.

Official data revealed that during 2025, the Motor Vehicles Department issued 52,543 e-challans compared to 40,197 in 2024. During the same period, authorities seized 1,528 vehicles, suspended 1,641 driving licences, blacklisted 10,439 vehicles, cancelled 1,192 registration certificates and withdrew 300 route permits.

Authorities said the modernisation drive and strict enforcement measures have contributed to a steady decline in road accidents across Jammu and Kashmir over the past three years.

According to official figures, road accidents reduced from 6,120 cases in 2023 to 5,726 in 2024, and further declined to 5,287 cases in 2025.
