An encounter broke out between personnel of the Special Operations Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir Police and suspected criminals near Green Belt Park in the Gandhi Nagar area of Jammu on Tuesday evening, officials said.
According to police, the exchange of fire took place during an operational action launched against the suspects in the Mini Market area near Green Belt Park.
In an official statement, police said that at around 6 pm on May 26, 2026, a team from Police Station Gandhi Nagar, accompanied by an SOG unit, reached the area to carry out action against suspected criminals.
“During the operation, the suspects attempted to flee and deliberately rammed their vehicle into the SOG vehicle,” the statement said.
Police further stated that the suspects subsequently opened fire on the police party, prompting SOG personnel to retaliate in self-defence.
“In order to protect themselves and prevent further threat to life, the SOG personnel retaliated in self-defence by returning fire,” police said.
Following the incident, the area was immediately secured and additional police reinforcements were rushed to the spot. Officials said the operation was still underway at the time of filing this report.
Police added that cognisance of the offence has been taken and further legal action is being carried out in accordance with the law.
