The All Kashmir Mutton Dealers Association on Sunday alleged that livestock trucks transporting animals to the Valley continue to face illegal extortion by contractors in Punjab despite repeated assurances and official directives issued by the Punjab Government.
Addressing a press conference in Srinagar, members of the association claimed that government orders aimed at preventing unlawful collections were not being implemented on the ground, resulting in continued harassment of transporters and traders.
The association alleged that contractors were illegally collecting money from livestock carriers at various points, causing financial losses and disruptions to the supply chain.
The dealers said they had repeatedly raised the issue with the concerned authorities and had received assurances that strict action would be taken. However, they claimed that the situation remains unchanged and that official directions are allegedly being flouted.
Urging the Punjab Government and law enforcement agencies to intervene, the association demanded immediate action to stop the alleged extortion, ensure the free movement of livestock vehicles and enforce the rule of law.
The traders warned that if the issue is not addressed promptly, it could adversely affect the timely supply of livestock to Kashmir and place an additional financial burden on both traders and consumers.
