Jammu, July 12: A police constable has been dismissed from service in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kathua district after remaining absent from duty for more than two-and-a-half years without authorisation, officials said on Saturday.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kathua, Mohita Sharma, ordered the dismissal of Selection Grade Constable Bachan Sharma (No. 469/K, PID No. EXJ-111259), a resident of Dhaloti in Marheen tehsil of Kathua district, who was posted at the District Police Lines (DPL), Kathua.

According to police, Sharma, who joined the Jammu and Kashmir Police as a constable in 2011, was marked absent from duty with effect from November 10, 2023.

Despite repeated notices, wireless messages, summons issued through Police Station Rajbagh, show-cause notices and publication of notices in leading newspapers, the constable failed to resume duty, officials said.

A departmental inquiry was subsequently initiated, which found him guilty of wilful and prolonged unauthorised absence spanning more than two-and-a-half years, amounting to gross misconduct and a serious breach of departmental discipline.

Taking a serious view of the matter, the SSP ordered his dismissal from the Jammu and Kashmir Police with retrospective effect from November 10, 2023—the date from which he was declared absent.

Police said the dismissed constable has also been directed to deposit all government-issued property and obtain a No Dues Certificate (NDC) from the department. Failure to comply may invite legal action under the relevant provisions of law.
