Vehicular movement on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH-44) remained completely suspended on Friday after the district administrations of Udhampur and Ramban ordered a temporary closure to facilitate critical restoration and stabilisation works at vulnerable locations along the highway.
According to officials, the closure was imposed to allow intensive road restoration, debris clearance and slope stabilisation at Gangroo and Kishtwari Pathar in Ramban district, and Samroli and Ladha in Udhampur district.
Authorities said the temporary suspension of traffic was essential to ensure the safety of commuters while enabling the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to undertake urgent repair and maintenance works aimed at restoring the highway to safe operating conditions.
The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, the only all-weather road corridor connecting the Kashmir Valley with the rest of the country, has witnessed repeated disruptions in recent days due to heavy rainfall, landslides and shooting stones. Restoration teams have been working continuously to clear affected stretches and strengthen vulnerable slopes to minimise further disruptions.
The administration has advised commuters and transporters to avoid unnecessary travel and check the latest official traffic advisories before undertaking any journey on NH-44.
