LEH: The 13th edition of the Ladakh Marathon is set to become the biggest edition of the high-altitude endurance event so far, with the organisers announcing a record prize purse of ₹1 crore and registrations nearing the 10,000 mark.

Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh Vinai Kumar Saxena formally launched the official jersey for the 13th edition, marking the beginning of preparations for the prestigious sporting event.

The enhanced prize money has significantly boosted participation, with nearly 10,000 runners registering for this year’s marathon, compared with 6,521 participants last year. The increase of nearly 53 per cent highlights the event’s growing popularity among athletes from across India and abroad.

The Ladakh administration said the substantial increase in prize money reflects its commitment to promoting sports, encouraging greater youth participation and creating new opportunities for athletes in the Union Territory. The growing international and domestic participation is also expected to strengthen Ladakh’s position as a leading destination for adventure and endurance tourism.

Speaking at the jersey launch, Saxena described the marathon as much more than a competitive sporting event, saying it represents Ladakh’s resilience, cultural vibrancy and unique natural environment.

He underlined the importance of providing local youth with platforms to showcase their sporting talent while using major sporting events to strengthen Ladakh’s identity as a centre for adventure sports.

Held at an exceptionally high altitude, the Ladakh Marathon has developed a distinctive identity on the international endurance-sport calendar. The combination of challenging terrain, extreme altitude and Ladakh’s dramatic landscape has attracted runners looking for both competitive challenges and unique adventure experiences.

The administration said the marathon forms part of its broader effort to establish Ladakh as a centre of sporting excellence. At the same time, it aims to ensure that large-scale sporting events contribute to community development, environmental awareness and the promotion of the region’s rich cultural heritage.

With registrations approaching 10,000 runners and the prize purse reaching ₹1 crore, this year’s event is expected to draw unprecedented attention from the sporting community.

The marathon is also likely to provide a significant boost to local tourism and businesses, bringing athletes, visitors and support teams to Ladakh while showcasing the region as a destination capable of hosting major international endurance events.

The 13th edition is therefore being positioned not merely as a race, but as a celebration of endurance, sporting ambition, youth participation and Ladakh’s distinctive cultural and natural identity.
