Actor Saif Ali Khan has opened up about the lasting impact of the January 2025 stabbing at his Mumbai residence, admitting that he has still not completely moved past the incident and reacts whenever he sees a knife.
In an interview with in a local newspaper “Bombay Times,” Saif said his family had dealt with the aftermath remarkably well, although the incident had a particularly deep impact on his wife, actor Kareena Kapoor Khan.
“We have dealt with it remarkably well. I think the person most affected was my wife, who is generally a very sensitive person,” Saif said.
He added that while the family moved on relatively quickly, the experience continues to affect him.
“I am still not 100% over it because if I see a knife, it just makes me react,” he said.
Recalling the severity of the attack, Saif said he often thinks about how differently the incident could have ended.
He attributed his survival partly to the knife breaking during the attack and described himself as “incredibly lucky” to have survived multiple wounds.
“I start thinking about it. It’s just incredibly lucky because the knife broke,” he said, reflecting on the possibility that the injuries could have been fatal.
Saif also spoke about his ability to understand and, eventually, forgive the person responsible for the attack.
“I would happily forgive this person also,” he said.
The actor recalled lying in hospital after the attack and experiencing a profound shift in his outlook on life.
“Maybe, something has finally sunk in later, in this thick skin, that I want to be a bit more present,” he said.
Recalling his thoughts while recovering, Saif said he wanted to spend more time enjoying life with the people close to him.
“I remember lying in the hospital and thinking that I want to have really good wine with my good friends. I want to enjoy my life,” he recalled.
He said that, at the time, he had come to terms with the possibility of death.
“There was a feeling when I was covered in blood, that it’s been a great life. I just remember thinking that. It’s been absolutely a great privilege and a blast,” he said.
However, Saif added that while he could accept the possibility of dying, the prospect of being paralysed was something he could not come to terms with.
“I just want to hold someone’s hand and go. I was okay with that. But what I wasn’t okay with was to be paralysed. I was incredibly lucky,” he said.
Saif Ali Khan was stabbed multiple times by an intruder who entered his 12th-floor apartment in Mumbai’s Bandra area on January 16, 2025.
The actor underwent emergency surgery at Lilavati Hospital and was discharged five days later.
Mohammad Shariful Islam, who was arrested two days after the incident, remains in judicial custody in connection with the case.
