An IndiGo flight operating from Delhi to Chennai was diverted to Hyderabad on Sunday after smoke was detected from a passenger’s personal electronic device, reportedly a power bank, inside the aircraft cabin.

Flight 6E 6115 landed safely at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) in Shamshabad, Hyderabad, where an emergency response was initiated. All passengers were safely evacuated from the aircraft, according to an airport official.

IndiGo confirmed the diversion, stating that smoke had been detected from a customer’s personal electronic device kept onboard. The cabin crew responded promptly and brought the situation under control before the aircraft landed in Hyderabad.

The incident reportedly involved a power bank that caught fire inside the cabin, raising concern among passengers and prompting the emergency response. No injuries were reported in the information provided by the airline and airport official.

Alternate travel arrangements

Following the diversion, IndiGo began making arrangements to help affected passengers continue their journey to Chennai and other destinations. An airport official said passengers would be accommodated on the next available flights.

The airline said it was also providing refreshments and sharing timely updates with passengers while arranging their onward travel.

“We regret the inconvenience caused to our customers due to this unforeseen situation and are making all efforts to minimise it, including offering refreshments and sharing timely updates,” IndiGo said in a statement.

The aircraft’s safe landing and the evacuation of passengers brought the immediate incident to a close, while arrangements were being made to minimise disruption to their travel plans.
