The Varanasi Municipal Corporation has approved a proposal to relocate all meat and fish shops operating within the city to designated locations on its outskirts as part of efforts to improve urban management, sanitation and traffic conditions.
The decision was taken during a House meeting chaired by Mayor Ashok Kumar Tiwari. Municipal officials said a roadmap for the relocation has been finalised, with the first phase of implementation expected to commence in the coming days.
Municipal Commissioner Himanshu Nagpal informed the House that five sites have been identified for the initial phase of the project. The locations have been selected near the city’s outer boundaries to minimise inconvenience to residents while ensuring regulated commercial activity.
Under the proposed plan, meat and fish shops currently operating within the city limits will be shifted to designated zones in Ramnagar, Sujabad, Ganeshpur, Awaleshpur and Shivpur.
Officials said the move is intended to enhance cleanliness, streamline municipal services and reduce congestion in densely populated areas. The civic body believes that relocating such establishments to organised clusters outside the city centre will contribute to better urban planning and improved public hygiene.
The proposal is expected to affect hundreds of businesses operating across the city. However, municipal authorities have not yet announced a timeline for the complete relocation process.
Further details regarding the implementation strategy, infrastructure development at the new sites and rehabilitation measures for affected shop owners are expected to be released in the coming days.
