Examiner Bureau | Baramulla:

Sakeena Itoo on Saturday strongly condemned the use of abusive language against women on social media, stating that such behaviour reflects the “failure” and “weakness” of those engaging in it.

Addressing a gathering at the Government Degree College for Women in Baramulla, the minister said she remains open to discussion and criticism, but the use of offensive language on platforms such as Facebook is unacceptable.

“If you want to have a discussion, you can engage with me, with MLAs, or with officials. Dialogue is always welcome,” she said, emphasising the importance of civil discourse.

Itoo added that resorting to abusive language online only diminishes the credibility of individuals and reflects poorly on their conduct. She stressed that criticism should be expressed in a respectful and constructive manner.

Highlighting cultural and ethical values, the minister said that Islam accords the highest respect to women, including sisters and daughters, and such dignity must be upheld in public interactions.

She also pointed out the contradiction of such behaviour, noting that abusive remarks are often directed even when women lead political parties.

Calling for restraint, Itoo urged people to avoid misuse of social media and instead engage in meaningful discussions, reiterating that the government remains open to dialogue on all issues.
