Agencies | Islamabad:

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday claimed that the final text of a proposed peace agreement between the United States and Iran has been agreed upon, raising hopes of a diplomatic breakthrough that could help end months of conflict following US-Israeli strikes on Iran.

In a post on X, Sharif said Pakistan, which has been actively mediating between Washington and Tehran, is now working with both sides to finalise the remaining procedural steps before the agreement can be formally concluded.

“Amid ongoing intense mediation efforts by Pakistan, we are fully aware of the incessant misinformation campaign being waged by those who want to sabotage the peace deal,” Sharif wrote.

“We can confirm that a final, agreed-upon text of the peace deal has been reached and Pakistan is now working closely with both sides to finalize the next steps. Peace has never been this close as it is now,” he added.

Iran Signals Optimism

Sharif’s remarks came shortly after Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that an agreement between Tehran and Washington had “never been closer.”

Referring to the proposed framework as the “Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding,” Araghchi urged media organisations and commentators to avoid speculation about the document’s contents until it is formally finalised.

“The Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding has never been closer,” Araghchi wrote on X. “Pending its finalization, the media should refrain from entering speculation about its content.”

His comments suggested growing optimism surrounding the negotiations despite continuing public disagreements over the reported terms of the proposed accord.

Further fuelling speculation, US President Donald Trump later shared a screenshot of Araghchi’s statement on his Truth Social platform, prompting expectations that an official announcement could be forthcoming.

Conflicting Claims Over Agreement Terms

Despite positive signals from all sides, significant uncertainty remains regarding the actual contents of the draft agreement.

Iranian media reports have claimed that Tehran would retain control over the Strait of Hormuz and continue to uphold its right to uranium enrichment. However, a senior White House official reportedly told AFP that Iran had agreed to dismantle its nuclear programme, eliminate its stockpile of enriched uranium, and reopen the strategic waterway to international shipping.

Trump also dismissed reports circulating in Iranian media, asserting that the leaked details did not reflect the terms agreed upon during negotiations.

“The terms that Iran leaked out to the Fake News have NOTHING to do with the terms that were agreed to, in writing,” Trump wrote on his social media platform.

“What they said, including their weak and pathetic statement on having a deal, bears no relation to the truth,” he added.

Awaiting Official Confirmation

While speculation surrounding the proposed agreement continues to intensify, neither Washington nor Tehran has officially confirmed the specific provisions contained in the draft text.

With Pakistan claiming that negotiations have reached their final stage and both sides signalling cautious optimism, international attention remains focused on whether the proposed accord can deliver a lasting diplomatic resolution to one of the region’s most consequential crises.
