Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, members of his Council of Ministers and legislators on Tuesday joined a cleanliness pledge and signature campaign at the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly Complex in Srinagar as part of the ongoing Swachhata Hi Seva (SHS) 2026 campaign.
The initiative at the Assembly complex sought to reinforce the message that cleanliness is a shared responsibility and encourage greater public participation in sanitation, waste management and cleanliness drives.
Abdullah, along with ministers, legislators and other dignitaries, participated in the signature campaign and took the cleanliness pledge.
The nationwide SHS 2026 campaign is being observed from September 17 to October 2 under the theme, “Swachhata Mein Sahbhag; Swachh Bharat, Viksit Bharat”.
The campaign focuses on citizen participation, cleanliness of identified target areas and public places, youth engagement, welfare of sanitation workers, segregation of waste at source and initiatives aimed at converting waste into wealth.
The participation of elected representatives is also intended to carry the cleanliness message to their respective constituencies and encourage people to take part in local cleanliness drives, practise responsible waste disposal and adopt source segregation.
The Directorate of Rural Sanitation is coordinating the campaign across Jammu and Kashmir. The Union Territory-level campaign was launched at Block Khonmoh in Srinagar on September 17.
At the launch, Director General Rural Sanitation Anoo Malhotra called for making cleanliness a sustained habit rather than restricting it to a time-bound campaign.
The campaign will continue across Jammu and Kashmir until October 2, with activities centred on cleanliness, citizen participation, youth engagement, sanitation-worker welfare and improved waste management.
