Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday distributed appointment letters to 132 newly recruited Junior Engineers (Civil) of the Public Works (Roads and Buildings) Department at a function held at the Sher-i-Kashmir International Convention Centre (SKICC) in Srinagar.
Congratulating the appointees, the Chief Minister described the occasion as a significant milestone in their lives and urged them to view their positions not merely as government jobs but as a responsibility towards the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
Emphasising the values of honesty, integrity and professional commitment, Omar Abdullah said public resources must be utilized responsibly and efficiently, as every rupee spent by the government belongs to the people.
He stressed the need for high-quality and durable infrastructure, noting that roads, bridges, hospitals and other public assets should be built to serve not only the present generation but also those to come.
The Chief Minister said engineers would play a pivotal role in shaping Jammu and Kashmir’s development trajectory over the coming decades. He encouraged the recruits to uphold ethical standards, accountability and a strong sense of public duty throughout their careers.
Advising the newly appointed engineers to serve wherever assigned, including remote and underserved areas, Omar Abdullah urged them to avoid seeking immediate transfers and instead focus on contributing meaningfully to regional development.
Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary, while addressing the gathering, congratulated the recruits and highlighted their crucial responsibilities in project planning, execution, supervision and quality control. He called upon them to ensure transparency and timely completion of developmental works without compromising on standards.
Advisor to the Chief Minister Nasir Aslam Wani described the appointments as a recognition of merit and said engineers form the backbone of infrastructure development and nation-building.
Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo and Engineer-in-Chief (Secretary Technical), Public Works Department, Purshotam Kumar also addressed the gathering, underscoring the vital role of engineers in strengthening the region’s infrastructure.
Senior officials of the Public Works Department, the newly appointed engineers and their family members were present on the occasion.
