National Conference (NC) president Farooq Abdullah on Monday reiterated that the restoration of Article 370 remains the party’s central political objective, asserting that there is “no question of stepping back from this struggle.”
Addressing a gathering in Budgam, Abdullah underscored the party’s commitment to safeguarding the rights, dignity, and identity of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. He said the NC’s foundation is rooted in the sacrifices of its cadre and the legacy of leaders who fought for democratic rights and social justice in the region.
Highlighting the historic role of the party, Abdullah recalled the transformative land reforms introduced under the leadership of Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah, which empowered farmers and significantly reduced poverty and inequality. He noted that these measures laid the groundwork for a more equitable and stable society.
However, he expressed concern over what he described as the gradual erosion of constitutional safeguards over the years, culminating in their complete abrogation in 2019. He maintained that restoring these protections remains non-negotiable for the party.
The former Chief Minister also stressed the importance of restoring full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, calling it essential for effective governance. He said delays in fulfilling this commitment undermine democratic processes and hinder the functioning of an elected government.
Abdullah further remarked that governance challenges in the Union Territory require clarity and coordination, asserting that democratic institutions must be allowed to function without impediments.
Reaffirming the party’s stance, he said the National Conference will continue to raise the issue of constitutional and democratic rights at every platform until its objectives are achieved.
