Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Wednesday urged the Centre to strengthen rail connectivity in Jammu and Kashmir during a meeting with Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in New Delhi.

Highlighting the growing demand for improved rail infrastructure and services across the Union Territory, Abdullah sought a stoppage for the Jammu–Srinagar Vande Bharat Express at Anantnag to enhance connectivity for South Kashmir and adjoining areas.

The Chief Minister also proposed increasing the frequency of Vande Bharat services to the Kashmir Valley, particularly during the scheduled closure of Srinagar International Airport from October 1 to 15, 2026, when runway maintenance work is expected to temporarily suspend flight operations.

Abdullah noted that the airport shutdown coincides with a peak tourism and pilgrimage season and could significantly impact the movement of visitors and residents. He stressed that enhanced rail services would provide a reliable alternative mode of transport during the period.

“Strengthening rail connectivity during the airport closure will help ensure uninterrupted passenger movement while supporting tourism, trade and overall economic activity in the region,” the Chief Minister is understood to have conveyed during the meeting.

Abdullah also appreciated the performance of the Jammu–Srinagar Vande Bharat Express, describing it as a landmark initiative that has significantly improved connectivity between the Kashmir Valley and the rest of the country.

According to official sources, the Railway Minister took note of the proposals, which are expected to be examined by the Ministry of Railways.

The Vande Bharat Express connecting Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra and Srinagar was flagged off earlier this year, establishing the first direct rail link between Jammu and the Kashmir Valley and marking a major milestone in the region’s transportation network.
