India produced a commanding performance on Tuesday, thrashing South Africa 6-1 to register its first victory of the ongoing FIH Women’s Hockey World Cup.

Sunelita Toppo, Navneet Kaur, Sushila Chanu, Deepika, Lalremsiami and Sakashi Rani found the net as India completed its biggest-ever win in World Cup history.

The emphatic victory will come as a major boost for the Indian side, which entered the contest with confidence after holding Olympic silver medallists China to a 2-2 draw in its opening match.

India controlled the contest with an attacking display, repeatedly putting the South African defence under pressure and converting its opportunities to seal a comprehensive six-goal victory.

The result gives India valuable momentum as the tournament progresses and strengthens its hopes of making a deep run in the competition.

India will next face England, with the team looking to build on its impressive performance against South Africa and continue its campaign on a winning note.
